Anyone traveling to Iceland should not worry about there being too little to experience or do on this island. Because there is so much excitement on this island to last for a lifetime. After your airplane most probably lands in Keflavik, the first obvious destination is the capital city Reykjavik. This city has 60 percent of the population on Iceland, with its approximate. 178 500 inhabitants. It therefore is one of the smallest capital cities in the world. Reykjavik is therefore certainly a center of attraction on the island, since it is here most of the culture, trade, and international connections are located.
First thing to notice in Reykjavik, is how beautiful it is, with much water surrounding the city. Reykjavik is a mix between the new and the old. You can see nice and really old streets and houses, but also the new and modern architecture designs. To say that the city is an high quality cultural hot spot is an understatement. There are much to experience here. Iceland and Reykjavik are known for its fashion designs, arts and crafts, coffee shops, movies, and for a turbulent nightlife. It would be a shame not to spend some days and nights in Reykjavik.
When your in the capital city, you might as well take a walk, and visit some of the important places. “Althingi” is the parliament in Iceland. It is a gray two floor high old house made in 1881. Right nearby is the spot where it is believed that the founder of Reykjavik had his farm. This place is called “Austurvellir” and the founders name is of course“Ingolfur Arnarson”.
Next visit should be to the National museum, which houses a great collection of over 16 000 historic artifacts, which gives tourists a good look on how living conditions was on Iceland for ages ago. It takes you back from the viking age and to the present time. One of the main tasks for the National museum is to protect 40 historic buildings, located all around the island.
“Hallgrimskirkja” is the largest church on Iceland, and is clearly a must for tourists to visit. It is quite easy to find, since it is placed on high ground and the building itself is high. Making it visible over a large distance. The church was built over a 40 year period, and was completed in 1986. It also contains an elevator that will take you up inside the tower, and this is recommended to do. Because the view from there is amazing!
Together with Hallgrimskirkja, “Perlan” is one of the best lookout points in Reykjavik. It is a very special building, is is shaped like a round glass dome, and it can maybe look like some sort of UFO. Inside there are exhibitions, cafeteria, lookout platform, and at the top a really good quality restaurant that rotates around the floor.
Maybe specially suited for the kids or the entire family is the Botanic garden and zoo (Grasagardur Reykjavik), located in Laugardal. Here you can of course have a look at all types of plants and animals that lives on the island. And also in the same area there is an specially designed family park called “Fjölskyldugardur”, which have lots of activities for both children and youths.
If you are interested in art, then you will find Reykjavik an exciting city. There are many art museums here as well. In the middle of the city you have the “Listasafn Reykjavikur” museum, which contains a large collections of art by the famous artist Erro. Then there is the “Nylistasafnid” museum. Built in 1978, and is run by only by a group of artists. This gallery has important artwork, that shows real Icelandic art, but also some contemporary international art.
